Book 8: 1984-85
Mid-January 1984: the boys(Jack and Fritz) go camping, and Hoeschler relatives arrive.
Judy Ranheim's 43rd birthday party at our home-- 30 days late! The usual musicale...
Kristen races in cross-country h.s. ski sectionals for the Saint Paul Academy team.
Weekend of Feb. 3-5: Jack and Kristen visit Dick and Finette Magnuson in Cable, WI.. LLH is in Florida with Steve Lovas and his good friend, Betty. We visit Aunt Jewell Skinner who lives nearby with her son, Bill.
Feb. 11-12: St Paul Academy students host a madrigal dinner (Jack gets a marvelous costume from the Guthrie Theater for Kristen.
3/3/84: Annual Boy Scout pancake supper at Gloria Dei Lutheran church; Don and Beth Becker (old Yorkshire Avenue neighbors) join us. Jack puts Fritz to bed (or is it vice versa?)!
Domestic scenes at 1630 Edgcumbe. Our finches reside in unused TV cabinet in kitchen: they keep dying off, only to reckon after some time that the cabinet backs onto a garage wall with hanging furnace (we have been gassing them all these years!). Sigh.
4/7/84: St Paul Athletic Club awards. KBH receives the Fr. Lott Sportsmanship trophy; Fritz gets the Bowling trophy. Great family days--simple pleasures.
4/15/84: Family bike ride along the Mississippi: water, water everywhere!! 4/22/84: Easter with perennial baskets and lettuce for the Easter Bunny.
LLH unsuccessfully tries to save a window kill; Steve and Sonja Lovas. Dressed for church at Plymouth Congregational in Minneapolis.
4/30/84: Sudden snowfall on the night of our party Dave Brubeck (who performs with his family at O'Shaughnessy Auditorium). Jack left at intermission to get Kristen to join us at the concert, only to discover a fallen tree blocking entry to our house (soft ground; heavy snow). So he spends the 2nd half of the concert sawing up the wood and all is well. Brubecks were the loveliest guests, such a warm family, and Dave's wife, Iola, wrote the kindest thank you. Great folk! (Jack and I told Dave how much we had enjoyed dancing at his Valentine's concert in DC in 1964.)
5/8: Jake Hoeschler is 40! May 20: KBH is confirmed at Plymouth. Maureen and Tori join us.
May 24: FRH is 13! Camping with Dad. June 3 KBH is kidnapped for church breakfast (part of Confirmation rituals).
Aunt Helen Nelligan (LLH fave) & her friend Harriet visit from Thornwood, NY. Fritz is a Campfire Girls reunion interloper. Iris, iris everywhere...
Jack and Linda formally become members of Plymouth CC. Jeanne Baldy, our talented piano teacher of Kristen and Fritz. June 10 recital, Weyerhaeuser Hall at Landmark Center, St Paul. Fritz attends Boy Scout Camp Tomahawk.
6/16: We attend Emilie and Henry Buchwald's 30th anniversary party at their home. June 23: Dressed for the annual Symphony Ball (Minnesota Orchestra benefit).
July 4 at Minnesota State Capitol in St Paul: a grand show with MnOrch playing and fireworks commencing with the "1812 Overture." With the Jim/Mo Hoeschlers and Joe Micallef.

7/15/84: Jack visits Kristen at Interlochen music camp in Michigan.
7/19/84: LLH at 40! Fritz bakes the birthday cake and Alan Frese visits from CT. Dear Manny.

8/27/84: Back from Toronto to celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary. Dollhouse dramas.
KBH & Mother go to the Labor Day 1984 wedding rehearsal for Royce Nelligan & Deborah DeWalt. Kristen plays for that wedding and family strikes various poses. Lower left is Steve Lovas and Bruce Nelligan.

1/8/85: Grand Ordway opening for a full week--concerts each night and absolutely thrilling. 1/26: Cole Porter 30's gala at IMS in Minneapolis; Jay and Judy Hoeschler join us.

4 Feb 85: Jack is 43. Annual Boy Scout Awards night at Gloria Dei--always a heartening event (Jack is Asst Scoutmaster)
2/15-17: Weekend at Lutsen, MN where we get to stay at Bussens' wonderful Superior Lake-side cabin. We ski Cascade River on February 17--simply great!
More family shots in Lutsen area. Dinner with Jim and Joni Bussen. (I think we had the Bussen cabin to ourselves, and met up with them in Duluth as we drove down to MSP, and they drove up to Lutsen.)
2/23/85 Fritz is cellist for SPA madrigal event. March 3 blizzard. Radiation!? (Jack's pants spotted with spray stain remover--but he points to cavity for new microwave!)
