Book 7: 1982-83
July 19, 1982: LLH celebrates 38th birthday at an ACA (American Council for the Arts) retreat at the Cogan home in Southhampton, LI. Lovely summer "cottage" is later torn down by them to build a new home! Bottom: some of our Edgcumbe flower gardens.
8/7/1982: We host a wedding party for Jane Buchwald: string quartet concert and dinner. At her wedding reception Jack and I dance up a storm (and he dances with many, including Ann Lewis); raccoon on our garbage can!
Fritz returns from Spanish language camp and models his beret.

Fritz and Dr. Wendell Mordy practice cello early each morning, 6:30, for half an hour (Wendell locks the door if Fritz is late by as little as a minute--which doesn't happen very often! B. Dalton staff picnic here and at park behind our home.
Kristen, just back from a summer Interlochen Music Camp, goes on a B. Dalton business trip with me to Iowa to check out "my" stores. En route, we visit Uncle Jack (and Aunt Polly) in Humboldt, Iowa. On the way home we drive up through the beautiful rolling hills of NE Iowa.
We head south to La Crosse for a lovely Labor Day: Janice Hoeschler; Kristen holds Katie Hoeschler and Jake holds baby Tori.

While we're on a slow boat in China (a month on a marvelous Columbia U tour), kids go to Turkey Days in Worthington with grandmother, Hildur Lovas.
10/1/82: Kristen is Sweet 16!! With Doyle kids in our yard; an early frost; Katie Hoeschler.
Halloween: Kristen and Fritz dress for Halloween (and decorate her doll house appropriately!). With Babe Zats at a benefit...probably SPCO.
We spend a November weekend at Lutsen, courtesy of Bussens' offering us their wonderful cabin on Lake Superior.
Kristen wears a "Princess Di" dress. Thanksgiving 1982 with Janice, Greg and Meagan.
Elizabeth and Christopher Inm (and probably their parents) come visit. Jack and Linda attend a ball--probably the Children's Hospital benefit. On Dec 16 we host a 42nd birthday dinner for Judy Ranheim; teacher and Kristen play flute duets.
Christmas 1982 decorations. Kristen and Katie Hoeschler enjoy Advent wreath candles (heat propels shepherds and Wise Men visiting stationary Nativity scene). LLH purchased the wreath from Powers department store about 1969.
Dollhouse decorated for Xmas. Christmas Eve at the Coulee (Hoeschlers') where we put on a concert and Manny joins us.
We then go over to newlywed Janice's with plum pudding provided by Judy Hoeschler.

New Year's Day 1983 we all go skiing on the Apple Valley Zoo trails. Tori, 2, rides in a cozy (we hope!) sled, pulled by her dad.
On January 4 we invite Vangs for dinner, only to learn that our Western food, especially red meat, is not to their taste.
Un-dressing the Xman tree. All over for the year! Fritz skis the Winter Carnival race, then is inducted as a Tenderfoot Scout. (Hildur signed Fritz up for Scouts while we were in China, believing he needed more economic diversity exposure; she also signed up Jack as an assistant Scoutmaster!)
We serve Scout dinner; KBH wins 2nd Prize for her cake; Jack turns 41 on February 4th.
Fritz and Wendell Mordy play cello and talk--a wonderful mentorship in all ways (Wendell heard Kristen play piano at our home, and thinking her so talented, decided to give Fritz a chance at "his own" instrument). Katie Hoeschler isn't sure about these cousins!
We ski out west for Spring vacation. We first fly to Salt Lake City on 3/12 then drive on to Jackson Hole until March 20. Cross country skiing into Jenny Lake at Jackson.

Back on the downhill slopes, Jack holds a jumping contest with the kids.
Unfortunately, Jack forgets to tell the kids to remove their wrist straps, so on one jump Kristen breaks her arm. Fritz falls and sees KBH's injured state.
The Jackson Hole ski patrol gets Kristen onto a sled and takes her down the hill.

Easter, April 3, 1983: Kristen's sling matches her dress; Ranheims come for Easter dinner: Bjorn, Luther, Fritz and Kristen on our front stairs.

Fritz in cowboy gear (hat a gift from Cadles). Spring flowers bring us enormous joy!
KBH takes Minnesota Music Teachers Association exam on May 21; I have her pose with crabapples and tulips, all in full bloom (and matching her outfit).
Terri Timmerman, our new babysitter and coordinator after Helen Miller retires; Terri is a student at Concordia College, St Paul. Fritz turns 12 on May 24 and "Ma" Jones joins us in the celebration.
Mrs. Jones, the kids' first regular babysitter when LLH started work, plays delightful piano tunes; she once was a professional kindergarten teacher.
May 25, 1983: KBH wins Latin Award at SPA!
Memorial Day weekend, 1983: Doyles and Steve Lovas make for a lively and musical visit.

June 7, 1983: Evening bike rides are one of our favorite and very regular family activities.

Poua Vang, a wonderful woman who helps with the garden, suddenly shows up and wants KBH to dress up in Hmong outfits, just as I'm trying to leave for APA in Los Angeles!
1983 Labor Day weekend in Dresbach, MN...always a bit wistful at summer's end. Kids all love to waterski and Jack is a great driver and coach.

9/17-18, 1983. Aunt Jewell Skinner, a real gem and Jack's aunt, comes to town and we always love having her. Kristen and Fritz make a dragon with old sheets (don't remember what triggered that creative endeavor!)
Kristen is 15, Luther Ranheim is 10 so we have our usual Hoeschler-Ranheim early October joint celebration at our home. Helen Miller joins in.
Kristen dons Communion cups from Plymouth Congregational Church as "glasses"! It's a lovely day so we retreat to the deck. Manny and Helen Miller (friends, but never an "item"!)
Jake Hoeschler plays trumpet at LaX Octoberfest. KBH hosts party for SPA classmates 10/29/1983: we start at our house then go to St Paul Athletic Club for water volleyball and other recreation.
Walt Rychewski, an NCS co-worker, visits from Kansas and helps Kristen with her school science project. FRH in school play. KBH with dumbbells.
11/4/1983: Trip to La Crosse where we celebrate Jay Hoeschler's 30th birthday..
11/15/1983. Meagan Maureen Roesner is christened. I take time-delayed family Christmas card photo at Jake and Janet Hoeschler's home. B&W: Katie and Lizzie Hoeschler.
We ski in Vail at beginning of holiday vacation (very, very cold) then go to Hildur Lovas' condo to spend a quiet Christmas.
