In Kahlo and Rivera home environs.
Mexico Ciudad: Ballet Folklorico, San Angel (a prosperous suburb where we enjoy a splendid lunch), Obregon's monument with his arm in formaldehyde! We leave Mexico Ciudad for Villahermosa, the capital of Tabasco State. Jack, through his board and omnitheater work at the Science Museum of Minnesota, has met several Mexican scientists/leaders who are building wonderful museums and theaters with Mexico's oil boom money. Sr. Suarez' stunning omnitheater impresses us with its design, drawing from classic native buildings for inspiration.
Sr. Suarez, whom we hosted in St. Paul, has invited us to Villahermosa and arranges for an assistant, Gladys to show us important archeological sites. We first visit La Venta: many Olmec sculptures in situ. Simply fabulous!
Fritz particularly enjoys the animals in La Venta.
Palenque: stunning Maya city ruins date from ca. 226 BC to ca. 799 AD. Vegetation grows so quickly in this jungle that men use machetes to cut it back each day!

Frolicking on Camptel's perfect beach; Kristen and Fritz in new straw hats at Tulum.
We sleep in platform tents and rest in hammocks.
The native staff are so excited by the pinatas that we let them have a go at it! It was a real thrill to see their joy, and realize that this simple pleasure to us was a big and unusual treat to them. How much we have..Jack and the kids on the ferry to Cozumel.
Motorbiking around Cozumel...so lightly clothed. Fortunate that we had no accidents!
We return to Mexico City, and tour some of Diego Rivera's murals with a guide.

3/5-7/1982: We spend a delightful weekend at the substantial, stately Lutsen cabin of Jim and Joni Bussen, with Lee and Jo Hermann, Jim & Maureen Hoeschler.
More scenes from Lutsen woods on Lake Superior. We ski up the Cascade River-bed with Hermanns, successfully avoiding sections of soft ice and open water!

We celebrate the birthday of our neighbor (and head of the Science Museum and Fritz' volunteer cello teacher), Wendell Mordy! birthday. Impressive clouds captured on the road back from South Dakota; LLH's work for B. Dalton, Bookseller.
May 9, 1982: Mother's Day. Jake and Janet Hoeschler drive up with Heather.
We to to Landmark Center for a delightful Mothers Day tea dance--oh I miss those days!
Heather is unsure whether or not she wants to dance with an enthusiastic Fritz. Jake and Mo bring almost-5-month-old Tori to the party.
