Thanksgiving and Christmas, 1978.
Hildur Lovas and Elizabeth visit over the holidays. Jack beats time for Fritz as he practices piano.

April 15, 1979: Dressed for church, followed by an Easter-egg hunt with Jay Hoeschler and cousin Heather.
May 1979: LLH in her DHC office; Fritz wins advertising audition to make a commercial for Schmitt Music piano lessons! Beat out many girls, including Kristen.
May 24, 1979: Fritz turns 8 so we make a big birthday card poster for the front door. Cake refers to his winning audition/commercial!
Aug 1979: Manny comes for a visit, Kristen holds Mookie, and we now have a lovely new treehouse (sleeps four!). Treehouse is used for years until the tree dies.
Piano recital June 13, 1979. Fritz goes to Alaska with Steve Lovas to visit Uncle Stephen. So generous of Stephen. Fritz names his salmon after his schoolyard crush, Johanna...and brings the fish home for a later feast.

August 3, 1979. Marvelous Dvorak Festival in Spillville, IA featuring first rate soloists--to the exhaustion of the small town! Aug 1979: Peter and Margitta Warmbier, teachers from Würzburg, Germany, stay with us for a few weeks as part of an exchange program.
Peter had a good camera photos are seriously improved. LLH models snake to Fritz' delight; Fritz watches TV--the forbidden fruit.

Oct 1, 1979--Kristen turns 11: homemade cake at home, then birthday party with classmates.
Halloween theme: Heart (Kristen) and Soul (Fritz), accompanied by Jack on baritone and Jake on trumpet. Nov 4 GTCYS multi-youth orchestra concert (Kristen plays flute, Fritz cello).
I visit Colorado Springs; Fritz on piano; Jack fishes out West with Dr. Jim Bussen and friends.
A complex fishing trip, for sure!
Thanksgiving and Christmas, 1979
Jake, Janet and Heather join us for Christmas 1979. Our foundling cat, Scruffy--terrible fur, not neutered (we had it done, but it didn't stop his spraying)--eventually wanders off after I threaten to...well, you know!

Mexico Feb 29-Mar 15, 1980--we love it!. First stop, Mexico City: Chapultepec Park; Ballet Folklorico; Cathedral and Zocalo.
Our Lady of Guadalupe church in Mexico City. Maguey and beer drinking donkey. Teotihuacán--ancient Meso-american city outside Mexico Ciudad.
Teotiuacan cont. March 5: Oaxaca with Manny while Jack goes to Monterrey for a meeting (Science Museum/Omnitheater related).
Monte Alban outside Oaxaca: the terraces, dams, canals, pyramids and artificial mounds carved out of the mountain; inhabited over 1500 years by Olmecs, Mixtecs and Zapotecs.
More scenes around Oaxaca: Kids in the guardhouse; tule tree; flat tire on the way to Mitla.
Markets and crafts villages surround Oaxaca.
3/9: After Oaxaca we fly to Merida, then drive to Uxmal with its fabulous pyramid of Magician and a wow of a Sound and Light show. We overnight in a Club Med "family" hotel and meet a teacher (cum students) who recommends a locally owned hotel south of Cancun: Capitain Lafitte's. Good choice!

Xel-Ha: a marvelous underwater park, safe and full of colorful fish. (Manny is a natural!) Punta Bete is a wonderul stretch of beach.
Easter 1980 at Edgcumbe, with Jake and Maureen Hoeschler, Royce Nelligan and Kurt Schroeder.
May 24, 1980: Fritz's 9th birthday. June 15 overnight in our tree house!
Steve Lovas visits. We pose with Star Wars props and Jack chops up a fallen tree.
Fritz plays cello with a broken arm; Kristen's dollhouse (our mother-daughter hobby); Kristen prepares for her spring piano recital;
Birthday celebration for Laura Sewell; sailing in La Crosse; Canoeing on the Namekagon River in Wisconsin.
Heather Hoeschler spends the week with us that includes a visit to Shakopee's Murphy's Landing. We drive to Interlochen Camp to pick up Kristen who spent 8 weeks studying piano and flute (Aug 1980).
After Interlochen we drive to La Crosse where we host a surprise 40th Anniversary party for Jake and Janet Hoeschler.

The day after the party we attend church on St Joseph's Ridge where Jake and Janet wed.
We visit Imms in Salem, Massachusetts.
Kristen and Fritz start school at Webster Magnet in September 1980; we gather at the Coulee after Grandma Maebelle Hoeschler's funeral.
