Book 3: 1974-78
May 24, 1974: Fritz turns 3, with Grandpa Jake Hoeschler in attendance. Fritz soon goes to Children's Hospital to remove his tonsils and adenoids: when he returns home and responds to normal voice tones, we realize how little he could hear before. Aunt Marie Prevelige visits from NJ. Kristen and Fritz get chicken pox so Jack and I travel alone to Steamboat Springs, CO where Jake and Maureen marry on June 1!
We take our annual June vacation on Madeline Island, this time with Kathleen Lombardo and girls, Rosalia and Adriana--Manny couldn't come so he invited them!
Lombardos leave after a week, and Roger Montgomery, comes (friend and fellow-singer in the Bach Society). "Ma" Jones, faithful sitter and summer day camp at Zats' home (daughter runs it).
Tarrytown visit. On our 8th anniversary, 1974, we're off to State Fair. Kristen's Oct 1 and Heather's September 24 birthdays (ages 6 and 4) are celebrated in LaX and at our home.
Kristen's birthday party at our house includes Aunt/Uncle Laura and John Doyle, as well as Yorkshire neighbors, Don and Beth Becker, Vic and Vivian Strand. Halloween 1974 costumes: Kristen is a butterfly princess and Fritz is the caterpillar (he, of course, got all the attention!).
Kristen and Fritz play with 1 year old Luther Ranheim; over the years our two families shared many holidays and celebrations together. Christmas. Hoeschlers come from LaX to spend Christmas day with us!
Christmas Day at the Doyles' with Manny. Suddenly, its 1975!
1975: Kristen rides her bike in her poncho. Jack terraces the southeast corner of the yard to provide a level lawn for the kids' swing set as well as a lower sandbox (Jack gets sand from Shepard Road spillage from sandstones, but it's full of fleas!) Fritz turns 4 May 24 and is speaking...although a long way to go.
Once again we kick off the summer with a delightful 2 weeks at Kron's cabins on Madeline Island.
Our pet crabs! October 1975 images of pet crabs, Ma Jones and pumpkin, Kristen in mantilla (we had traveled to Spain that Spring) and as a colonial dame.
Halloween 1975 is a family affair as the family dresses as gypsies (with an organillo we had purchased in Barcelona); Fritz in a monkey costume LLH sewed--and guess who got all the attention! Al Ominsky (graphic designer with whom LLH worked on several free-lance projects); KBH with Ashleigh Dennett; Fritz with Christopher Pheil; Manny and Judy Ranheim (with Fritz and Luther).

(Before that, we meet with paleontologist and dinosaur expert, Jim Jensen, at his worksite on the Green River, CO.) Then off to San Diego to visit the Sullivans (with whom Jack is working on the new Science Museum in St. Paul).
A delightful day at the San Diego Zoo and Sea World.
Besides learning about animals, we also must play!
Disneyland is next stop. Enjoyable but not as impressive as Disneyworld (esp since the latter has a lot more acreage).
Watts in LA: many structures covered in mosaics; moving and impressive. (We also saw the preview of "Chorus Line" in LA with the Sullivans-wow!)
We continue our drive up the coast and hike around lovely Carmel.
Kristen loves to gather giant seaweek and run along the seashore--wild fun!
Mission at San Juan Bautista; Yosemite.
Jack and Kristen at our last stop, Mount Rushmore, before our drive home. Fritz has stayed with Steve and Hildur Lovas in T-Town during our vacation. Bottom: Jack, Mike Sullivan and Taizo Miyake in San Diego; Bobby Riggs plays a demo match in La Crosse.
Kids play in LaX; Jack tries logrolling in Hayward, WI.
Late summer and Oct 1976 in and around Edgcumbe.

From Princeton we head to DC (where LLH meets with NEA--most impressed by our Arts analysis and report!); from there head to Chicago to visit our beloved Manny Elson; back home for Easter 1977.
Easter at Edgcumbe with the Doyles; Fritz learns to ride a bike; and Manny visits. (LLH starts new job at Dayton Hudson Foundation on April 1.)
May 24, 1977: Fritz turns 6 (he loves to dress like and work with his father); Kristen breaks a leg on a trampoline in La Crosse, but still able to play her piano recital and exercise, in a way...
We go to Madeline Island, but this is to be our last year since Kristen gets sand up her cast. With Fritz and Judy Seymour, in the Gem Lake cabin that becomes ours in 1986!
Sept 1977: kids with Manny, a fine day at the Renaissance Fair in Scott Co; scenes at Edgcumbe; with Heather.
October 1977: Kristen turns 9 (family dinner with Doyles and Ranheims), then a party with her classmates.

Ma Jones 80th birthday party, July 22, 1978 (A guest, Helen Miller, offers to take care of our children and the house, and what a godsend! She manages everything at Edgcumbe while Jack and Linda build complex careers.) Fritz plays cello each morning with Dr. Wendell Mordy who lives across the road--fabulous! Kristen goes to Alaska with Hildur Lovas to visit Uncle Steve Lovas

Wedding shots...and time for swimming too!
Lovely day for a wedding!
Sailing and swimming after the wedding. Labor Day Weekend on the North Shore with Manny...beautiful weather continues.
Wonderful hiking along North Shore rivers and falls; we also swim in various kettles (Kristen gets pulled down in one swirling cauldron on the Brule River; Jack grabs her just in time not to drown and get pulled underwater to Lake Superior. I still get chills thinking of it...)
We really needed this weekend break, after LLH's 5 months of trying to repair disfunction in her new Communications department. Eventually succeeding!
