Book 18: 1994-95
Barbara and Sherman Winthrop host a party with a good band...so Jack and I dance. July 1-10: kids are home for a visit so we play family tennis, but of course! Mother & Dad 16 years after they separate and divorce. (Laura and Mother went to Florida to visit Dad.)
July 14-18: Jack and LLH go to Aspen for Linda's board meetings for Chamber Music America. Betty Musser invites us to stay at her home on Red Mountain; it is our good fortune that the well-known landscape architect of Japanese gardens, David Slawson, also shares the Musser home during our stay (he was designing a garden at the Aspen Institute in honor of John Musser). We had read Slawson's book and invited him to advise us on doing a Japanese-style garden on our west lot at Edgcumbe. Harris Hall at the Aspen Music Festival.
We hike in Ashcroft outside Aspen. Nana Hoeschler connects with us, although LLH can't remember how!
We continue to explore this silver mining ghost town.
Back home we celebrate LLH's 50th birthday with the usual delightful guests, Hella and Bill Hueg, Sam and Thelma Hunter.

Hmongs help us at both Gem Lake and Edgcumbe; here one has grabbed a mole out of the ground and does it in! Brilliant caterer and friend, Soile Anderson, matches the porch furniture!

Carol Wincenc and her son. Hmong who help us (and eventually steal a bit, then lose their children due to compulsive gambling). Malvern, Iowa visit where Hildur Lovas is living (home of her grandparents and a good fit with cousins around).
Aug 21: Malvern, IA family reunion: Steve Lovas family, all of us, and Doyle family with Mother. Mother and Dwayne (a friend who made all our crocheted hangers!). Wederquist farm home in Randolph, IA. Composers Forum evening presentation regarding our work in Vietnam.
Aug 27: our 28th wedding anniversary. Ruth & Toa Gundersen come to stay at cabin, but on drive from downtown Minneapolis they head west. We are worried and somehow they turned around and found the cabin in the dark!
Sep 4: A day at the State Fair with Doyles. Sep 8: MCC (MN Commissioning Club) meeting at the cabin where author Debra Frasier and Steve Heitzeg run through our exciting commission, "On the Day You Were Born" for the Minnesota Orchestra.
Composers Aaron Kernis, Neely Bruce, Morton Subotnick & Chen Yi are on a Forum panel and stay with us at the cabin. Aug 18: Jay & Judy bring an electric boat to try out on Gem Lake. Last swim weekend.
Oct 4: Minneapolis Basilica Blessing of the Animals on St. Francis Feast Day. A Forum composer wrote the animals' march: we brought Crystal and Liz Scmidt brought Crystal's brother, Beauregard. What Jack thought would be a crazy cacophony turned out to be a magical experience, especially when priest Michael O'Connell asked the humans to be quiet: all was silent.

11/17: JGH anxiously waits for post-concert party to start! Young Nam Kim & Paul Schoenfield. Nov 20-26: Thanksgiving in New Orleans with Kristen, Fritz and Nana (a surprise!) Our great B&B, the House on Bayou Road.
11/21: Kristen and Nana. We begin our New Orleans tour on bus--Degas' house the pickup point. St. Louis Cathedral. Natchez calliope and steamship. French Quarter.

12/24: Christmas Eve. First we go next door to Culligans, then up to Doyles. Exhausted cat with catnip mat. Jack tries yo-yo.
12/25/94 - 1/1/95 Westward (Norwegian Line) cruise of Caribbean; Nana's gift to the family. We spend Christmas Day in San Juan.
