Book 16: 1993
Jay and Judy Hoeschler family Xmas shot. Kristen and Fritz, both living in DC, attend the 1993 Inaugural Ball for incoming president Bill Clinton.
We drive west with Jim and Joni Bussen to ski at Jackson Hole, WY.
No drive through South Dakota is complete without a stop at Wall Drug.
Dubois Mercantile in Fremont Cty, WY: burned down in 2014.
We all enjoy the cross country skiing these sunny days. We stay with Bussens' good friends, Lee and Jo Herman (who live on Christmas Lake in Excelsior, MN).
We did both X-country and downhill skiing at Jackson Hole.
On the way home through SD we stop at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, whose facade of native grains and grasses is redone each year. (George Pillsbury told me that one his ancestors built it.)
Late arriving photos from others: Jack and LLH in Jackson; Vennie Carroll, hew two daughters, Michelle and Yolanda, with Yolanda's son. Gene and Mugs Hoeschler, Jack's aunt and uncle.
At the suggestion of Linda Bunnell Jones (Vice Chancellor of MNSCU) to go to Paris together, we plan a trip there. We arrive Feb 28, rest up, then walk the Left Bank and Notre Dame in the afternoon.
Monday, Mar 1: We spend almost the entire day at the Louvre, exploring its endless galleries. Our fine hotel is a converted convent (and one to which we are returning Dec 2024 to celebrate, belatedly, my 80th birthday--with KBH's family, of course).
Mar 3: We spend the day on Montmartre, starting with the famous cemetery. Hector Berlioz, lower right.
de Gas vault, upper right. Lower photos: tacky tourist trap.
Sacre Coeur at the top of Montmartre: dreary inside. The Bateau-Lavoir was the residence and meeting place for a group of outstanding early 20th-century artists such as Pablo Picasso, men of letters, theatre people, and art dealers.
Jack goes to Cherubini Tuesday eve. Wed we walk around the city: including the Orangerie. That evening we attend "L'histoire du Soldat", a magical, inventive performance at Opera Bastille in a tent erected in the park fronting the Opera. Thurs: we go to the D'Orsay Musee & the ballet.
Feb 3-5: We track down Gao, Vietnamese composer, then go off to La Defense to meet our goddaughter who works there, Elizabeth Imm. I walk back to our hotel; we are off to an Eiffel Tower at night; great Italian dinner.
Montparnasse cemetery, with the grave of Sartre and Beauvoir. We then take the train to the great Chartres.
Chartres--a glorious afternoon there.
At Eliz Imm's Apartment. with Beatrice & Jacqueline (beneath her portrait done in 50s).
Beatrice drives us to a flea market outside Paris, then to Fontainebleau where we do a quick look-see.
Off to Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte
Back to Paris with cocktails on McClure's barge at Pont Neuf.
Mon Mar 8: finally spring weather! McClure boat in fore (blue and white). Bridge over the Seine. We tour Law Courts, Palais de Justice and St. Chapelle.
More Paris sights. Bottom: Centre Pompidou or the Beaubourg.
Sights from inside, outside and around the Beaubourg.
Walking around Paris...
Opera Bastille...and a Michelin-guided tourist.
Final photos of Paris--Linda Bunnell never shows (and has no good excuse!).
Apr 11: Easter. Janice and Meagan join us and Kathrin Hoescheler for church and dinner. LLH in her Queen Elizabeth suit--a rather dowdy look that inspires change!
We head to the cabin for an egg hunt and dinner--ice is still on Gem Lake. LLH tries to grind artichoke leaves in the disposal and poor Jack has to clean up the stuck pipe mess. (Never did that again!)
Front courtyard at Edgcumbe (that gets overhauled in 1997 by pro David Slawson), and shots at the cabin. Kristen with friend.
Apr 18: Minnesota Historical Society with Meagan; Jack, ?, Meagan and Janice Hoeschler. Mandu and Sterling relax in Edgcumbe kitchen window-seat.
Apr 25: Bie Vangs. We drive down the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi--always like going back in time.
Stockholm, WI. Jack, ? (must have been an out-of-town guest) with Henry Blodgett, probably in Frontenac, MN. LLH, determined not to look like Queen Elizabeth, cuts here hair--perm remains, for the time being. Last weekend in April, LLH favorite, "green lace."
Madeline: one of LLH's favorite bluebirds who returns for several years to the same nesting box. Mid May days at the cabin.
May 14: more beautiful Gem Lake cabin sights.
A heavenly spring at the cabin.
Fritz and Steve Doyle.
May 24: Fritz is 22. We celebrate with the Doyles. Sunset shot taken from a plane.
May 26: Composers Forum staff retreat and picnic at the cabin.
Sunday, May 30: Ranheim boys and Tori Hoeschler join us at the cabin. (I think Holger, German exchange student who's living with Ranheims is at the "extra" young man.)
We celebrate Fritz' and Bjorn's birthdays but without Fritz! (he's in Tucson). The show MUST go on! Bjorn plays cello--he's a star at a young age. Kristen canoes.
Memorial Day, May 31: Hildur Lovas and Laura Doyle visit on the lawn. John Snidarich bikes by with his newly-adopted daughter, Brandi.
Tyler Lovas plays violin. The two Steve Lovas men; Sonja with her boys and their grandfather, Steve Lovas. Steve Lovas, Jr. takes Fritz and Kristen out for dinner in DC--he's always so good to them.
June 8 at the cabin: baby foxes have been living in the culvert under our road; we later learn the mother was hit and died on Goose Lake Road. We find a sweet young baby and bury him in our rose garden.
June 11: We host a Composers Forum dinner party for Wayne Peterson (Pulitzer Prize winning composer), Marty Bresnick (famous Yale composition prof) and the dynamic Alexander String Quartet. It's a glorious night with lively conversation and perfect weather.
A violinist, Gary Schulte, erects a teepee on the shores of Gem Lake. LLH with Bill Morelock's two sweet kids.
June 17: Morelock kids spend the night. Father's Day June 19. Bill and Bob of MPR (cum Mike and Tessa Morelock).
Bill is recently divorced and has moved from SD to work with Bob at MPR (while his kids live in SD) so we offer a getaway and friendship.
More cabin scenes...beautiful June days.
LLH with Gary Schulte and his teepee. June 22 dinner for clarinetist David Shifrin & the Minnesota Commissioning Club. We discuss a new work for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center series where Shifrin is Artistic Director.
June 23:Teepee concert by Gary at the Forum's annual meeting at the cabin. Jack the trailblazer. Composer Dan Godfrey & avian acquaintance.
Not bad but for bruises! Bird dancing. Bluebird shirt from Mike. Jack. Loon on the lake.
July 3: Paul Schoenfield stays with us and plays "Bethena," KBH's favorite. Relaxed cat takes in Paul's rags.
John & Laura Doyle. July 4: too much rain! Gregory Page visits--he's working with Jack on the Riverfront Redevelopment Commission.
July 10: Huegs and Hunters come to the cabin for dinner, dancing and a sleepover.
Song & dance: Sam and LLH cut a rug. Jul 11, Jimmy and Maureen visit the cabin. Lovely photo of Hella and Bill Hueg.
Tori & Fritz canoe on the lake. July 16: We drive to La Crosse for Judy Hoeschler's Rendezous on the Mississippi--a lot of work for her, and a lot of fun for us.
Rendezvous images...
Jack with Kurt Schroeder and his family at the Rendezvous. Images at the Hoeschler Cottage on the Mississippi: LLH, KBH off to wedding.
Jul 19: LLH birthday morn, a perfect day. Heen & Boone for 49th birthday overnight' they bring supper. Great time with the best of friends.
