Jack, Jake, Jay and Fritz Hoeschler meet in Aspen to ski the 10th Mountain Hut-to-Hut Trail. Unfortunately, Fritz gets severe altitude sickness which a female guest in one of the huts diagnosis and properly tells Jack he has to bring Fritz down to a lower altitude. That works!
The three brothers continue on without Fritz.
All ends well...
April 10: Hyde Park and one of FDR's homes. We then travel up the road to the Vanderbilt home.
Park Ranger instructs us. Always enjoy being back on the Hudson River.
Apr11: Sleepy Hollow restoration, Philipsburg Manor in North Tarrytown (now Sleepy Hollow), NY. LLH's old stomping grounds.
Our destination for this trip: Sail Alaska reunion, 4/11-12 at Kykuit, Pocantico Hills [Rockefeller estate].

Wonderful to be able to walk these gorgeous grounds, including Nelson R's Japanese garden (where LLH brother, Steve, worked for a couple of summers).

Jun23: Composers Forum annual meeting at cabin. Jack leads a tour.
Next day it's back to the office: LLH with Philip Blackburn.
Jun26: 40th anniversary party for Dick and Finette Magnuson at the St. Paul Rowing Club.
We spend a delightful afternoon in Frontenac, MN with architect Benjamin Thompson (he's working with JGH on Riverfront Redevelopment) at Ben's cousin's home, Henry Blodgett. Henry and Ben talked about the "real" people behind some of the characters in F. Scott Fitzgerald's fiction: LLH wishes she had taken notes!
Jul 11: We host a party for the upcoming wedding of Claire Buchwald and Larry. Gary plays fiddle and we dance!
Jul 19: Birthday trip to La Crosse; the night before Fred and Gloria Sewell gave LLH a surprise 48th birthday party.

July 21, Red Lake Reservation. LLH drives there to meet with Tribal leaders to discuss how a composer might be in residence and enhance existing programs...or create new ones. A job description is drafted and Andy Vores, a Welsh composer who lives in the US, is selected. This successful pilot becomes the basis for the Composers Forum's Continental Harmony, a national Millennium celebration.

July 25-26: Carol Heen and Charlie Boone spend the night at the cabin.
Aug 8: Delightful boat ride on the Mississippi with the Hoeschlers. Monique is au pair for Jay and Judy Hoeschler (we had met her family on a recent trip to Dresden). 74-year-old Nana looks quite beguiling! Curly-head William Hoeschler.
Jack and LLH go to Santa Fe Aug 12-18, and take Monique along.

Aug 27: We celebrate our 26th anniversary. (I believe a horse-drawn carriage from Dellwood to a so-so German restaurant. But still lovely--LLH always a sucker for carriage rides! On Aug 29 Fritz returns to college.
From Sep 12-20 we are guests of Rick and Nonnie Burnes; we sail from Boston and up the coast to Canada. Fabulous sailors and the bests of hosts!
Alan and Cecily Morse join us for part of our voyage. We visit Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Franklin Roosevelt's family summer home where FDR contracted polio.
We continue up the coast through the Bay of Fundy (world's highest tides) to St John's where we have dinner (and get stuck, so have to wait for rising tides to release our boat; Rick is not happy he let that happen!)

Sep 21: Plymouth, MA. From Sep 21-23 we visit Ben Thompson's whimsical and stylish compound on in West Barnstable on Cape Cod.
We stay in one lovely cottage, a converted utility building, and walk along wildflower-bordered paths to the main farmhouse which Ben has enclosed with a 360 glass/screen porch.

Oct 9-11: We spend a delightful weekend at the Heen farm in Maynard, MN. Carol has rescued an amazing unplumbed Victorian-era house from the estate of 7 Norwegian bachelor brothers. The move to the Heen farm is next!

We visit several battle sites, such as Wood Lake, where Jack's great grandfather, emigrant John Jacob Hoeschler, a member of Company K, fought the Dakota Sioux to the Missouri river.

Andy Vores comes to Minnesota to interview for the Bemidji State-Red Lake Reservation semester-long residency (He is chosen and does a fabulous job!). Nov 3: Staff farewell party at Edgcumbe for Karen Nelson who's off to Brazil.
Nov 25-29: Family Thanksgiving at the Cloisters, Sea Island, GA. Perfect!
