Christmastide amaryllis blooms into January. Winter Carnival is 100 years old, so the loveliest Ice Palace (in my lifetime!) is assembled in Como Park. Fabulous!

March 1986: Over the kids' school spring vacation we travel West. First stop: Oregon. Portland has an impressive downtown with great mass transit.
Steve and Sonja Lovas continue to show us around Portland, including the lovely Japanese garden.

We pack up for a ski vacation at Bachelor Mountain in Bend, OR where Steve and Sonja have a timeshare.

We enjoy a tour of Oregon's wineries--a chance to sample Oregon's burgeoning industry and to get to know Sonja.
3/16/86: We drive down the coast and tour of the impressive Claremont Colleges; In the afternoon we tour Universal Studios and set of 2001: A Space Odyssey. LLH dons a suit for the set--good fun.
3/17: We drive north to Santa Barbara and Montecito to meet with Eunice Butler re purchasing the Gem Lake Cabin. 3/18 Up Hwy. 1 to San Francisco... but not able to make it due to massive mudslides.
March 18: Monterey Peninsula and 17-mile-drive in Carmel.

Mar 29: yard clean up patrol; Terri Timmerman visits. Mar 30 Easter: our quartet, cum Manny, are dressed for church. Easter brunch at the Deco Restaurant.
After brunch with the Hoeschlers, we return to our home for an egg hunt.

May 10: While touring Philadelphia-area colleges, we stop by the Dad Vail crew races where Jack's Georgetown team won in '62 and '64. May 11: Mother's Day touring Valley Forge.
May 12: we tour Bryn Athyn where Dan Ebert, a marvelous leader and Stroke of the Georgetown Crew, grew up (Church of the New Jerusalem). Dan was killed in Viet Nam. We then head for Princeton, NJ and Washington, DC.
May 24: FRH is 15! Mordys and Ranheims come to celebrate.
May 26-: Doyles come from Worthington for Memorial Day weekend.

June 1: Fritz is a kidnapped confirmant! On June 3 KBH attend's SPA Junion prom with John Murphy. He is a real gentle-man. Pre-dance gathering of students and their parents at home of John and Judy Murphy.

June 8: We host a dinner and recital [flute (Judy Ranheim) and harpsichord (Peter Hendrickson)] for Eunice Butler's 70th birthday. Jack Hannaford (JGH partner and to-be Gem Lake neighbor) stands with Peter Hendrickson.
That evening after the party...we bring KBH to bus terminal to visit La Crosse, then drive to Gem Lake for a sunset row.
June 16: Pre-Symphony Ball party at our house on a splendid evening--we all almost hated to leave! Jake and Maureen; neighbors Leslie Steen and Bob Ebel; Jake with ? (doctor's wife).
June 15: We all drive to Lake Minnetonka to celebrate Father's Day at the Lafayette Club.
We cruise on Lake Minnetonka; Nana drives to LaX in her Lincoln. Sunset at Edgcumbe.
June-July?: We four bike to Lowertown, St. Paul for a ceremony and parade commemorating the Minnesota soldiers sent to fight in the Civil War.

Tori sleeps in the tree house and is thrilled when she sees Bambi in the morn! July 4 river tour for Hildur Lovas and the Doyles by Jack.

July 8: We move to Gem Lake, the retreat we've dreamed about for years. It even comes with a trampoline!
July 19: LLH turns 42. Birthday party at the cabin with Bussens as our guests. LLH in NCS Board room.
At the end of July we travel to Santa Fe to celebrate our 20th anniversary with a chamber concert (and Steve Paulus music commission) followed by a dinner dance. We first visit Pamela and Don Michaelis i Albuquerque where their daughter, Annie Portia, floats in the altogether in their home pool.

Aug 10: 4 days past hysterectomy surgery, triggered by fibroids--a relief! Brooke Mordy visits me at the cabin. On Aug 17 Fritz returns from a month at (YMCA) Camp Widjiwagan in northern Minnesota.
